The post-war return of the Silver Arrows to Grand Prix racing took place at the 1954 French GP. Juan Manuel Fangio, who had piloted a Maserati to victory in Argentina and Belgium that year, took out the French GP at Rheims in the revolutionary W196 with its controversial fully-enclosed 'streamliner' bodywork. Fangio went on to win two consecutive F1 World Championship titles in 1954 and 1955 driving a combination of streamliner and monoposto versions of the W196.
